Owner Hiroyuki Hanaka (花香裕之) opened Aldgate in 1995 and never tried to “upgrade” it into a gimmick pub. It’s a 3rd-floor refuge off Shibuya’s Udagawacho: Tudor-ish wood, amber lamps, booths for groups, and a bar that still respects solo drinkers. Hanaka’s a record obsessive—thousands of discs, British rock heavy—so the soundtrack stays human. Beer is the point: roughly 21 taps and cask pulls when they’re running. The whisky list is longer than it needs to be; if the cask is gone, take a simple highball. Ask what’s moving fastest and drink it before it warms. Food isn’t garnish; pie-and-mash and stew keep you anchored. Come for regulars and match-night nerves, not photos.
